As we end summer it’s getting time to go back to work.... as we get everything back in shape for another year. We here at CHAPP are getting ready for another year and thought we would send out some thoughts as we all prepare for the coming season.......

Heat and humidity is wicked this time of year! As the heat index rises with the dog-days of August, please remind your supervisors to monitor all workers and make sure that adequate water is available for drinking. We have hand-outs here at CHAPP in English and Spanish that describe symptoms and treatment of the different levels of heat illness - please call our office if you would like copies for your employees.

A new workers’ compensation law change brings increased fines! The new law change that was passed this summer brings with it an increase in the fines for late reporting of an injury by the employer to the carrier / state. In the past, the State Division of Workers’ Comp could charge up to $500 for not reporting a claim within 7 days of the accident. This claim reporting period also includes claims that are medical only (no lost time). On October 1, 2003 this figure will rise to $1,000 per claim - and can be extended to $2,000 per accident if 10% or more of your workers’ comp claims in a calendar year are reported late! The State has already started to issue fines on ALL claims that are reported late (after 7 days from the date of accident). The fines will also go out on claims that you initially intended to pay, but then decided to report to the carrier as additional medical treatment becomes necessary - unless you report the claim within the initial 7 days after the accident. It is very important that you inform all of your supervisors and managers of the importance of timely claim reporting, and train ALL office staff in the means of reporting a workers’ compensation claim. ALL claims should be reported, even if you intend to pay the bill(s) as you expect the injuries to be medical only - that way if it later develops into more treatment, you will at least avoid the late reporting fine! Please pay attention to this change - and call our claims staff with any questions!

Fires in the grove and field can consume crops and equipment! A threat to our safety and livelihood that goes unnoticed in the field is fire. We had several instances last year of equipment starting fires and goats being totally destroyed due to fires that were not contained. Most fires can be put out with a fire extinguisher if the extinguisher is readily at hand when the fire starts. Critical moments are lost trying to find an extinguisher allowing the fire to grow past the capacity of the fire extinguisher when found. CHAPP would like to encourage all equipment operators to attach a fire extinguisher to each mobile piece of equipment, have one in every field vehicle, and train ALL personnel in the proper use of fire extinguishers. Only YOU can prevent fires from spreading - and the increased cost from equipment down time or injuries. Not to mention your business liability if the fire gets away and destroys grove or farm acreage! Please call our loss control specialists with any questions you have concerning fire safety!

The Southwest Florida Citrus Expo is next week at the Lee County Convention Center in Ft. Myers. The seminars and trade show are Wednesday, August 27th and Thursday, August 28th. Come by booth 301 and visit us there!

Ahora que se nos acaba el verano, es tiempo de volver a trabajar. ... mientras reparamos y ponemos todo para atras en forma para otro año. Nosotros aquí en CHAPP estamos preparandonos para otro año y pensamos mandarles algunos pensamientos mientras nos preparamos para la siguiente temporada.......

¡El calor y la humedad son malvados en este tiempo del año! Cuando las índices del calor asciendan en estos largos dias de agosto, por favor recuerdan a sus supervisores que deben de chequear a todos los trabajadores y asegurar que suficienta agua este disponible para beber. Tenemos folletos aquí en CHAPP en inglés y español que describen los síntomas y el tratamiento de los diferentes niveles de la enfermedad del calor - por favor llamenos a nuestra oficina si usted gustaria algunas copias para sus empleados.

¡Un cambio nuevo de la ley de la compensación de trabajadores trae multas aumentadas!  El cambio nuevo de la ley que se pasó este verano trae consigo un aumento en las multas por reportar tarde una herida por el empleador al asegurador/al estado. En el pasado, la División de Compensacion de Trabajadores del Estado Comp podría cargar hasta $500 por no reportar un reclamo dentro de 7 días. Este período de reportar el reclamo también incluye los reclamos que son médicos sólamente (sin tiempo perdido). ¡En el 1 de octubre de 2003 este precio subirá a $1,000 por reclamo - y puede ser extendido a $2,000 por cada accidente si 10% o más de sus reclamos de compensacion de trabajadores en un año común son reportados tarde! El Estado ha comenzado a dar multas en TODO reclaman que es reportodo tarde (después de 7 días de la fecha del accidente). Las multas saldrán también en los reclamos que usted pensó inicialmente pagar, pero entonces decidió reportar al asegurador cuando adicional tratamiento médico llegó ser necesario - amenos que usted reporte el reclamo dentro de los iniciales 7 días después del accidente. Es muy importante que usted informe a todos sus supervisores y a directores de la importancia de reportar en tiempo oportuno los reclamos, y entrene TODO personal de la oficina en los medios de reportar un reclamo de la compensación de trabajadores. ¡TODO reclamo debe ser reportado, aunque usted piense pagar la cuenta (s) que usted espera que las heridas sean médico sólamiente (menores) - esa manera si desarrolla luego en más tratamiento, usted evita por lo menos la multa por reportar tarde! ¡Por favor preste atención a este cambio - y llame nuestro personal de reclamos con cualquiera pregunta!

¡Los fuegos en las guertas (arboleda) y el campo pueden consumir las cosechas y el equipo! Una amenaza a nuestra seguridad y medio de vida que pasa inadvertido en el campo es el fuego. Tuvimos varios casos el año pasado de fuegos comenzados por equipo y “chivas” que fueron destruidas totalmente debido a fuegos que no se contuvieron. La mayoría de los fuegos pueden ser apagadas con un extinguidor del fuego si el extinguidor esta prontamente en mano cuando el fuego comienza. Los momentos críticos se pierden en tratar de encontrar un extinguidor y permite el fuego crecer tanto que pasa la capacidad del extinguidor para cuando se encuentra. CHAPP desea animar a toda operador de equipo poner un extinguidor de fuego en cada equipo, tener uno en cada vehículo de supervisión, y entrenar TODO personal en el uso apropiado de extinguidor de fuego. Sólo USTED puede prevenir los fuegos de extenderse - y el costo aumentado asociado en reparar equipo o heridas. ¡Sin mencionar su responsabilidad del negocio si el fuego va y destruye guertas (arboleda) o acres agriculas! ¡Por favor llame a nuestros especialistas del control de pérdidas con cualquier pregunta de seguridad con el fuego!
