The Latest News (Español) LOSS CONTROL & COMPLIANCE MANAGER As we head toward the end of this dismal season let’s not get lazy with safety.... injuries always pick up at the end of each season due to the heat, our mental tiredness, and a rush to get through. Don’t let “vacation blindness” affect your operation or it could be costly - we must stay alert through the last day! Heat and humidity has started its wickedness after a nice, long spring this year! As the heat index rises with the summer approaching, please remind your supervisors to monitor all workers and make sure that adequate water is available for drinking. As soon as the heat arrived we had two serious cases of heat illness that required hospitalization of field workers due to the seriousness of their heat-related illness. We have enclosed a hand-out we have here at CHAPP in English and Spanish that describe symptoms and treatment of the different levels of heat illness. Please call our office if you would like more copies for your employees! With summer comes our daily thunderstorms and lightning! Lightning strikes kill 75 - 100 people annually in the United States and we are lucky enough to live and work in Florida - the lightning “capitol”! Please make sure your employees are aware of the dangers of lightning and your supervisors monitor the weather daily to plan their activities. This time of year thunderstorms are a daily occurrence - and a safety hazard to field workers. Florida has about one million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes each year. The number one area for fatalities is in open fields, followed by water related areas, under trees, and driving equipment like farm tractors. These occur mostly in the months of June and July in the afternoon at about 3:45 PM. Training hand-outs are available here at CHAPP to help your employees with lightning awareness! Now that school is out child labor issues start to surface! Please remember that Florida’s child labor law is tougher than Federal law so the state standards are what we have to follow when employing minors (anyone under 18 - with some exceptions.) Three important issues are proof of age (which must be maintained at the job site), different minor age groups have type-of-work and hours-of-work restrictions, and the Child Labor Poster must be displayed if minors are employed. The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation has information on their web site that should answer any questions you may have on the restrictions as well as the poster you must display (http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/pro/childlabor/index.shtml) or you can contact our office to discuss your concerns! If your Contractor’s License (crew leader cards) expire during the summer months it is better for you to send in your renewal application before you leave Florida for the summer. By doing this your licenses will be ready when you return - all you will have to do is add your endorsements (housing, transportation, etc) to start the season. That is much easier than trying to do it all at one time - at the State’s busiest time of the year! Please call our compliance staff with any questions! MANEJOS DE PERDIDA Y GERENTE DE COMPLACENCIA(Conformidad) Ahora que nos dirigimos hacia el fin de esta temporada deprimente no seamos perezosos con la seguridad..... las heridas siempre aumentan a fines de cada temporada debido al calor, nuestro cansancio mental, y nuestro apuro para acabar. ¡No permita que la ilusion de las vacaciónes lo ciegen y afecte su negocio porque podría ser caro ‑ debemos permanecer en alerta hasta el ultimo día! ¡El calor y la humedad han comenzado su infamia después de una primavera agradable y larga este año! Mientras las índices del calor suben con el verano que se acerca, por favor recuerden a sus supervisores que deben chequar a todos trabajadores y asequrar que suficiente agua este disponible para beber. En cuanto el calor llego tuvimos dos casos graves de la enfermedad del calor que requirieron hospitalización de trabajadores del campo debido a la seriedad de la enfermedad relacionada al calor. Aqui hemos mandado un folleto que tenemos en CHAPP en inglés y español que describen los síntomas y el tratamiento de los diferentes niveles de la enfermedad del calor. ¡Por favor llamenos a nuestra oficina si usted gustaria más copias para sus empleados! ¡Con el verano vienen las tormentas y relampagos diariamente! ¡Relampagos matan 75 ‑ 100 personas anualmente en los Estados Unidos y nosotros tenemos “la suerte” de vivir y trabajar en la Florida ‑ "la capital" de relampagos! Por favor asegure que sus empleados están enterados de los peligros de relampagagos y que sus supervisores diariamente chequen el pronostico del tiempo para planear sus actividades. En este tiempo del año tormentas son una ocurrencia diaria ‑ y un peligro de la seguridad para los trabajadors del campo. La florida tiene acerca de un million de contractos de relampago de nube a suelo cada año. La area número uno para muertes es en campos abiertos, seguido es en áreas donde hay agua, bajo árboles, y conduciendo equipo como tractores de granja. Estos ocurren en la mayor parte en los meses de junio y julio en la tarde como acerca de las 3:45. ¡Aqui en CHAPP tenemos folletos disponibles para ayudar a sus empleados comprender el peligro de relampagos! ¡Ahora que la escuela está fuera asuntos de trabajo de menores comenzaran a surgir! Por favor recuerde que la ley de trabajo de menores en Florida es más dura que la Federal por eso los estándares del estado son lo que tenemos que seguir cuándo empleamos a menores (cualquiera bajo 18 ‑ con algunas excepciones.) Tres asuntos importantes son la prueba de edad (que se debe mantener en el sitio del trabajo), los diferentes grupos de edad de menores tienen diferentes restricciones en tipo de trabajo y horas de trabajo, y el deber de exhibir el cartelon de trabajo de menores si menores son empleados. ¡El Departamento de la Florida del Negocio y la Regulación Profesional tiene información en su sitio electronico (web site) que debe contestar cualquier pregunta que usted puede tener sobre las restricciones así como también el cartelon que usted debe exhibir (http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/pro/childlabor/index.shtml) o usted puede llamar nuestra oficina para discutir sus preocupciones! Si su Licencia de Contratista (Tarjetas de Líder de Tripulación) expira durante los meses del verano es mejor para usted mandar su aplicación de renovación antes que usted deje la Florida para el verano. Haciendo esto sus licencias estarán listas cuando usted vuelva ‑ todo lo que usted tendrá que hacer es agregar sus endosos (viviendas, transporte, etc) para comenzar la temporada. ¡Eso es mucho más fácil que tratar de hacerlo todo a la vez ‑ en el tiempo más ocupado del Estado en el año! ¡Por favor llame a nuestro personal del control de perdidas con cualquier pregunta!
